Dr. George Athwal is an orthopedic surgeon practicing in London, Ontario. He is originally from Vancouver, BC and completed his M.D. at the University of British Columbia. Being on the scientific committee for the 2019 International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES), Dr. Athwal organized a team with American based colleague and committee member Dr. William Levine, and New York based colleagues Dr. Anthony Romeo and Dr. Frank Cordasco to secure this congress for Canada.

It was stiff competition, and on September 18, 2019, Dr. Athwal and team presented their bid in Buenos Aires, Argentina to an audience of voting members. After a suspenseful process, they were successful, and Vancouver won the bid to host the 16th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES) in 2025.

The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) held their initial meeting in 1982.  The association was created to provide leadership, foster advances and enhance the study of shoulder and elbow surgery through research and educational programs. The ICSES takes place every three years and the purpose of each meeting is to allow individuals involved in this field of medicine to meet and discuss new ideas, as well as present scientific material.

The ASES strives to serve patients, members and society by advancing shoulder and elbow care, and a vision to create a world where patients have the best care.

We would like to send our appreciation to Dr. Athwal for all of his hard work and involvement in his successful bid for the 2025 ICSES!
