On March 25, 2023, Destination Vancouver’s Michelle Taylor (Manager, Meetings & Convention Sales for Canada & International) and Morgan Da Rocha (Manager, Meetings & Conventions, Business Development) attended the 2023 IEEE Vancouver Section Annual General Meeting (AGM) as the Destination Sponsor for the IEEE Vancouver Section. This event marked the first time since the pandemic that local experts from this section were able to gather in-person for an evening of networking, keynote presentations, and section awards. Here, Destination Vancouver was recognized for their consistent commitment in supporting IEEE Vancouver Section initiatives.

The benefit of the MIND Partnership: As Destination Vancouver’s MIND (Meeting and Innovation Network of Distinction) Partnership Program Manager, Morgan helps local academics, experts, and thought leaders share their work on the global stage. The MIND Partnership empowers local experts to share knowledge and influence, promote innovation, and tell compelling stories. This program connects experts with opportunities to bid-on and host national and international-sized conferences, poised to showcase their work, field of study, organizations, and institutions.

Bringing value through Destination Vancouver: In offering comprehensive services: from bid book development, bid presentations, budget planning, and hotel and conference facility liaising, Destination Vancouver is both a leader and trusted advisor in bringing conferences to Vancouver. Destination Vancouver removes the operational and logistical hurdles presented throughout the bid process to ensure that Vancouver leaders (such as IEEE members) can focus on their expertise – the ultimate differentiating factor!

Destination Vancouver’s continued support of IEEE has proved successful, as thousands of IEEE delegates will connect in the summer and fall at Vancouver’s LEED Certified Convention Centre. The Vancouver Convention Centre will welcome the 2023 IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and the 2023 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, Medical Imaging Conference and International Symposium on Room-Temperature Semiconductor Detectors (NSS MIC RTSD) in June and November of this year.

In hosting technical presentations, organizing local tours, arranging for industry support, and recognizing local members, the Vancouver Section supports the exchange of technical information and increases awareness of Vancouver’s engineering community.

Next Steps

Through their continued efforts, the team at Destination Vancouver was able to secure two bid seminars with the membership of IEEE’s Vancouver Section Leadership. The bid seminars will enable our team to further outline how Destination Vancouver and the MIND Partnership can support local Vancouver experts in the bid process and ultimately bring events to Vancouver that positively impact institutions, careers, grants, and research. Destination Vancouver will continue this momentum by showcasing Vancouver to the IEEE international membership at the IEEE Sections Congress 2023 in Ottawa and the 2023 IEEE Convene in Panama City.
